The Crown Publishing Group, a division of Penguin Random House LLC in the U.S. and Chatto & Windus, an imprint of Vintage Publishing, a division of The Penguin Random House Group in the U.K., jointly announce today the launch of a new imprint, Hogarth, dedicated exclusively to publishing fiction. Its mission will be to publish contemporary, voice-driven, character-rich stories that entertain, inform, and move readers. All Hogarth titles will be published in print and digital editions.

The Penguin Random House Publishing Group has acquired English- German- and Spanish-language publilcation rights for its international sister Penguin Random House territorial divisions to The Tools, whose authors, Barry Michels and Dr. Phil Stutz, were profiled in a galvanizing, widely-discussed article in the March 21 issue of The New Yorker. The piece described the revolutionary method for helping their patients—many of them highly creative—regularly defeat such personal success-limiting forces as anger, insecurity, and anxiety.

Penguin Random House LLC is adopting the agency model for e-book sales in the United States effective March 1, 2011. Going forward, Penguin Random House will set consumer prices for the e-books we publish, and we will provide retailers with a comission for each sale. There are no changes to our terms of sale for physical books.

For the second consecutive year, a Penguin Random House Children's Books title has won the highest honor in children's literature: the John Newbery Medal. Also, a Listening Library audio has received the coveted Odyssey Award for the best English-language audiobook produced for children and/or young adults. Penguin Random House Children's Books (www.randomhouse.com/kids), together with leading digital media agency Smashing Ideas, today announced that Wild About Books for iPad will be available in the iTunes store on December 16th. Based on the New York Times bestselling children's picture book, Wild About Books, by Judy Sierra and illustrated by Marc Brown, the app retails for $7.99, but is available now for a special introductory price of $4.99. This is the first product in the partnership between Penguin Random House LLC and Smashing Ideas, with more interactive digital books based on key properties such as pat the bunny, Little Golden Books®, and others scheduled to follow in the coming months.

Penguin Random House worldwide acquires multi-language publishing rights to 2012 Salman Rushdie memoir.
In one of the most far-reaching multi-national and multi-language book-publishing deals by one publisher for a single title, Penguin Random House has acquired rights to publish a memoir by Salman Rushdie in each of its territories across the world. Markus Dohle, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Penguin Random House worldwide, announced the acquisition of hardcover, paperback, audio, and e-book rights for English-, German-, and Spanish-language editions of the work-in-progress from Andrew Wylie, President of The Wylie Agency, the author's agent. Mr. Rushdie expects to complete his manuscript by the end of the year for publication by Penguin Random House in 2012.

Decision Points by George W. Bush publishing November 9 with 1.5 million copy first printing.
Decision Points by George W. Bush will be published in North America on November 9, 2010, by Crown Publishers with a first printing of 1,500,000 copies. The book is a chronicle of the fourteen most critical and historical decisions in the life and public service of the 43rd President of the United States.

Decision Points will be released simultaneaously in the U.S. and Canada as a standard e-book with the complete print edition text and photographs. Crown will simultaneously publish a deluxe e-book edition. This edition will be interactive, allowing readers to click on text to view additional multimedia content, including:

  • Videos from the defining moments of the Bush presidency, including President Bush's inspiring speech to 9/11 rescue workers, intimate Bush family movies, and a special introduction to the edition by the President himself

      Bertelsmann's €900 million cost-saving program impacts first-half results
      The international media company Bertelsmann has softened the impact of the global economic crisis with a Group-wide cost and efficiency program. As expected, the downturn in the advertising markets and consumer spending slowdown in many countries caused a decline in the Group's revenues and operating EBIT during the first half of 2009. However, the measures initiated to stabilize the core businesses have begun to show positive effects across all divisions. The full effect on results will be reflected during the second half of the year.

      Ballantine Books and ESPN Books form co-publishing alliance. First title, A Team to Believe In by coach Tom Coughlin, on sale September 2, 2008.
      Ballantine Books, an imprint of Penguin Random House, the world's largest trade book publisher, and ESPN, Inc. have entered into an agreement to publish 10-12 sports titles per year under the joint Ballantine and ESPN Books imprints, it was announced today by Gina Centrello, President and Publisher of The Penguin Random House Publishing Group, and Gary Hoenig, General Manager and Editorial Director, ESPN Publishing. The publishing program will include sports-related books ranging from celebrity titles to narrative non-fiction to reference.

      The Doubleday Broadway Publishing Group, a division of Bertelsmann AG's Penguin Random House LLC, will change its name to The Doubleday Publishing Group effective May 28, it was announced today by Steven Rubin, President and Publisher of the group. As part of its identity rebranding, Doubleday will also introduce a new corporate logo and unveil a revamped and enhanced website (www.doubleday.com).

      Barbara Walters's new memoir Audition has sold over 250,000 copies in its first week, making it one of the strongest nonfiction hardcover debuts in recent years and putting Walters in league with other blockbuster authors such as Bill Clinton and Bob Woodward.
      "This is a remarkable number for a work of nonfiction in what has been a flat retail environment," says Sonny Mehta, Chairman of the Knopf Publishing Group. "In just seven days, we have sold a quarter of a million copies of Audition. I have heard from booksellers across the country, and they are all enormously appreciative that Barbara's book is driving traffic into stores."

      In light of the continuing demand from retailers, Knopf has gone back to press for eight printings, bringing the total number of copies in print up to one million.

      Audition went on sale May 6, and it will debut as the number one book in the country on USA Today's bestseller list tomorrow, Thursday, May 15.

      The Time of His Time: A Celebration of the Life of Norman Mailer
      On Wednesday, April 9, the Penguin Random House Publishing Group division of Penguin Random House LLC hosted and helped organize "The Time of His Time: A Celebration of the Life of Norman Mailer" at Carnegie Hall in New York City. Penguin Random House published Mr. Mailer continuously for the past twenty-four years. The many speakers at the tribute included Joan Didion, Don Delillo, William Kennedy, Sean Penn, Mr. Mailer's nine children, and Gina Centrello and David Ebershoff, his publisher and editor respectively.

This is believed to be the first time a major trade publisher has offered readers the opportunity to buy digitized sections of a book.

      Former President Bill Clinton has written a book about citizen activism and public service that will be published in September by Alfred A. Knopf. The announcement was made today by Sonny Mehta, Knopf's Chairman and Editor in Chief.

      Bertelsmann boosts first-half operating result by 8.1 percent
      Bertelsmann posted a positive business performance for the first six months of 2005, having grown its operating result by 8.1 percent to €644 million (previous year €596 million). Nearly all divisions contributed to the improved performance. Penguin Random House book publishing, the magazine publisher Gruner + Jahr and the media services provider Arvato posted significantly higher earnings. Performance by the television, radio and TV production company RTL Group remained stable at last year's record levels. Direct Group's club business improved slightly. The BMG music division was on target, but did not match last year's first-half performance, which was characterized by extraordinary successes.

      In its first week on sale, Eldest, Book Two in Christopher Paolini's Inheritance Trilogy, sold more than 425,000 hardcover copies, making it the greatest single-week sale ever recorded for a Penguin Random House Children's Books title, hardcover or paperback, it was announced today by Chip Gibson, Penguin Random House Children's Books, President and Publisher. Eldest is also the fastest-selling title in the publisher's history. Eldest was published by Penguin Random House's Alfred A. Knopf Books for Young Readers imprint in the U.S. and Canada on August 23rd with a first printing of 1.3 million copies.

      Audio Book sales records set by J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.
      Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K. Rowling sold more than 165,000 copies in its compact disc and cassette Listening Library formats on Saturday and Sunday, the largest first two-day sale in the history of the audio book medium, Penguin Random House LLC reports. Sales were twenty percent greater than those of the previous Harry Potter audio book, published by Listening Library in 2003. In another sales milestone, both Amazon.com and Bn.com have been ranking the CD version as their #2 bestselling title overall, behind the #1 bestselling hardcover, an unprecedented showing for an audio.

      Eric Yang, one of Asia's most prominent and accomplished international publishing figures, who is the head of a highly successful Seoul literary agency, has been named President and Chief Executive Officer, Penguin Random House Asia, effective June 1st. His appointment was announced today in New York, Tokyo, and Seoul by Peter Olson, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Penguin Random House, the world's largest trade book publisher. Based in Seoul, Mr. Yang will oversee the day-to-day leadershop of the Penguin Random House Kodansha and Penguin Random House JoongAng joint-venture book publishing houses in Japan and Korea respectively, as well as help further formulate Penguin Random House's long-term strategy for potential entry as a publisher into the vast China book market.

      Listening Library, the children's audio imprint of Penguin Random House LLC's Penguin Random House Audio Publishing Group division, and the audiobook publisher of the first five Harry Potter novels, has acquired the North American audio publishing rights to J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, the sixth in the acclaimed series. The audio edition will be published unabridged on cassette and compact disc and go on sale in the United States and Canada on Saturday, July 16, 2005, simultaneously with the book's hardcover edition from Scholastic. Books on Tape, also a division of the Penguin Random House Audio Publishing Group, will distribute the title in the library and educational markets.

      Del Rey celebrates one millionth manga in print.
      Del Rey Books, an imprint of The Penguin Random House Publishing Group, announced today that it has surpassed a million copies of its manga in print in less than a year since the line's debut. The March 28th release of Ken Akamatsu's Negima, Volume 5 (#1 on the Bookscan graphic novel list for the week ending April 3) sent Del Rey over the million-copy mark.

      Bertelsmann Significantly Improves Results In First Six Months Of FY '04
      Bertelsmann significantly improved its year-on-year financial results for the first half of 2004. Operating EBIT increased to € 596 million (previous year: € 186 million). The BMG music division's recorded music triumphs and RTL Group's excellent business performance made an essential contribution to this rise in earnings. Arvato and Penguin Random House strongly increased their operating results. Direct Group held its position in a difficult market environment and was able to maintain its operating result. At Gruner + Jahr, the launch of new magazines resulted in a slight earnings decline. In reviewing the first half year results, it is important to be aware that some Bertelsmann divisions customarily achieve the majority of their earnings in the second half of the year.
